This is balanced by the fact, however, that it rises a minute later. Indications. Last Night's Festival. The festival of St. Agnes' Guild, at the City Hall lastv night was a social and financial success, although from several causes the attendance was not as large as had been expected What they lacked in numbers, how ever, they made up in liberality, and of 'the abundance of refresh ments that were for sale, nearly all was disposed of. We have not the exact figures, but we are aware that the net proceeds Were more than $100, which should be a cause of gratification to the management During the evening Mr. Armand Myers in behalf of St. James choir presented a cake which had been made purposely for the occasion, to Rev. The evidence wasconclusive of guilt, and the defendant was required to give a justified bond in the sum of $100 for his appearance at the next term of the Criminal Court, in default of which he was committed. In order to promote the efficiency, drill and discipline of the police force, Mayor Fowler, has requested Capt. J. H. Daniel,, of. the Wilming ton Light Infantry, to exercise them n a-drill, two evenings in each week, which the latter has kindly consent ed to do, and will begin a course suitable for the police immediately after Christmas. The Only Officer. The Capt. W. J. Price spoken of in the article copied bp us yesterday from the Raleigh News and Observer, relative to the North Carolina Regi ment in the Mexican war, is the late Dr. W. J. Price, one of the most highly esteemed citizens of Wilming ton just prier to the late war, "the rebellion" falnely so-called. Dr. Price was, w:e believe, the only commis sion officer from Wilmington in that regiment. He was the father of Capt. Joseph Price, of this city. The Jail. Mr.-- J. J. Ligon, general manager of the firm that built the new jail in this city, came here this morning, accompanied by two of the commis sioners of Charleston, S. C, for the purpose of having the latter inspect that building. At the time of the earthquake the Charleston jail was rendered worthless and since then prisoners have been confined in a wooden structure. The authorities now propose to build a sustantial jail and their inspection to-day was to see if our jail was made in such a manner as the people of Charleston would demand. They expressed themselves as highly pleased with what they saw. Drawn as Jurors.
